PS5 controller stick drift: What Causes Stick Drift
PS5 controller stick drift
If you've ever experienced your PS5 character walking on its own, menus scrolling without input, or your aim drifting off target — you've got stick drift. It's one of the most common controller faults we see at Game Gear Garage, and it's almost always fixable. But what's actually going on inside your DualSense?
How a Joystick Works
The thumbstick on your PS5 DualSense controller is connected to a small component called a potentiometer — one for the X axis (left/right) and one for the Y axis (up/down). As you move the stick, a tiny wiper slides along a resistive track, changing the electrical resistance. Your console reads this resistance as a position value and translates it into movement on screen.
It's an elegant system — but it has a fundamental weakness: physical contact.
Why Potentiometers Wear Out
Every time you move the stick, that wiper physically scrapes across the resistive track. Over thousands of hours of gameplay, this causes:
- Wear on the resistive track — creating dead spots or inconsistent readings
- Carbon dust buildup — contaminating the contact surface
- Wiper deformation — the wiper loses its tension and no longer makes clean contact
When the potentiometer can no longer accurately report the stick's resting position, your console interprets the noisy signal as movement — even when you're not touching the stick. That's stick drift.

What We See When We Open a Drifting Controller
When we disassemble a DualSense with stick drift, we typically find one of the following:
- Visibly worn or scored resistive tracks on the potentiometer
- Carbon residue contaminating the contact area
- A wiper that's lost its spring tension
- In some cases, moisture or corrosion from sweaty hands over time
The fault is almost always mechanical — the component has simply reached the end of its usable life.
The Permanent Fix: Hall Effect Sensors
Rather than fitting a like-for-like replacement potentiometer (which will eventually wear out again), we install Hall Effect sensors. These use magnetic fields instead of physical contact to detect stick position — meaning there's no wiper, no resistive track, and no wear. They're the same technology used in high-end gaming peripherals and are widely considered the gold standard for joystick accuracy and longevity.
Once fitted, Hall Effect sensors should last the lifetime of the controller.
Can You Prevent Stick Drift?
To some extent, yes. Avoiding excessive force on the sticks, keeping your controller clean, and storing it away from dust and moisture can all extend the life of the original potentiometers. But for heavy gamers, drift is often inevitable with standard hardware — which is why our Hall Effect upgrade is so popular.
